On this episode of On The Green, I spoke with Willy Williams, the Southeast Regional Manager of Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG). Willy shared some incredible insight into PXG and their title sponsorship of the upcoming PXG Match-Up Play Championship, slated for October 25 through November 4 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.
Willy’s position with PXG, which he’s held for two years, comes after 20 years of working in the golf industry. After starting out in the HR sector of a banking company in the mid-90s, Willy’s career path shifted to golf after receiving a call from one of his best friends growing up. He told Willy he wanted to open a golf shop and asked if Willy would be his partner in this new business venture—an offer Willy could not refuse.
“From there, we set out on a journey of epic proportions,” says Willy. “Neither of us had ever owned our own business or even thought of it. But I knew I wanted to follow a passion, and golf was certainly a passion of mine.”
In the following years, Willy worked in various sectors of the golf industry, from sports marketing to equipment manufacturing to managing regional retail sales teams. His wide range of expertise in the golf world helped make Willy the ideal man for the job of Southeast Regional Manager at PXG.
Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG)
PXG was started in 2014 by the founder of GoDaddy.com, Bob Parsons. Since then, PXG has been changing the way people buy golf clubs, firmly sticking to its mission to “revolutionize the equipment business using patented technology and the world’s finest materials.” And, in 2019, PXG was named one of the fastest-growing privately-held businesses in the United States by Inc. Magazine.
To this day, the company continues to grow, and there’s no end in sight. When asked what makes PXG such a successful company, Willy says, “First and foremost, we are a research and innovation company, and one that makes golf clubs for everybody. That’s our goal. We want to bring people to the game. We want them to enjoy the game. We want them to play better.”
Not dictated by strict deadlines or product cycles, PXG is committed to exceeding past generations of its product lines. The goal is to spend the time, money, and resources on the new iterations of products to ensure that they are always better than their most recent counterparts.
The result? PXG brings world-class fittings to all customers. Each golf club is meticulously fitted for each individual golfer, regardless of age, gender, or skill level.
As Willy says, “Everybody is good enough to be fitted and should take the opportunity and invest in the game. If you invest in the game, you’re going to enjoy it more.”
The PXG Women’s Professional Match Play Championship and Other Initiatives
As PXG continues to grow as a brand, the company is seeking out impactful ways to support the game of golf. So, when PXG was presented with the opportunity to sponsor this upcoming women’s tournament, it seemed like the perfect fit.
The PXG Women’s Match Play Championship, taking place later this fall, is a 10-day celebration of Women’s Initiatives, tying together athletes, business and community leaders, and students. During this first-of-its-kind two-week event, 64 of the best up-and-coming professional female golfers will compete in a 54-hole stroke-play tournament followed by a Match-Play event the following week.
“I was excited to give folks an opportunity to hone their skills, perfect their game, and give them an opportunity to play,” says Willy. “We are always looking for ways to bring and keep people in the game.”
PXG also supports a new initiative called “Make Golf Your Thing,” a global movement involving people inside and outside of the golf business to reintroduce the game of golf to those who may have stopped playing throughout the years.
